IMPLEMENTATION

The courses for Foundation Degrees (FD) will replace the current courses leading to Higher National Diplomas (HND) for the more highly qualifed recruits. They will focus on achievement of the skills, knowledge and understanding required for the highest levels of ‘STCW’ certification (i.e. Master or Chief Engineer Officer). The position in Scotland, where there are no plans to introduce Foundation Degrees, will be subject to further discussion.

The revised framework will be phased in over the next two to three years, with a target for the first Foundation Degrees to be available as from September 2006. It is expected that the existing HND-based schemes will continue for some time after that (subject to continued funding). This will provide the basis for the ‘alternative’ route, ensure continuity of supply during the transitional period and provide a fall-back position should there be any difficulties in recruiting for the Foundation Degree.   More … 4
